Sinus irrigation for the first time can be both frightening and a little intimidating, but believe me, don’t be afraid. If done properly, sinus irrigation can be liberating.

First pick a mechanical water pump. Make sure to read our post “What is the best sinus irrigation pump on the market”.

Then select the right irrigation instrument for you, through reading our post “Selecting the Right Irrigation Instrument”.

I have had people ask me if irrigating would make them feel as if they are drowning in a pool. I say emphatically, “No it does not”.

If you use the perfect saline solution, in the post entitled “The perfect saline solution” and the correct water pump and irrigation tools, you will not feel like you are drowning, you will feel relieved after irrigating a few times.

Be patient though, like anything else, it takes time to get used to it.

Set up a clean environment next to the sink that you will use for irrigating.

Set up your sinus irrigation pump and insert the Ethicare instrument into the wand of the pumping unit.

Turn the unit’s volume/pressure slide knob to its lowest setting.

Mix the saline solution for sinus irrigation. If in doubt of how to make a saline solution, our family favorite can be found in the post entitled “The perfect saline solution for sinus irrigation”. I personally double the recipe and mix 4 cups of saline solution. Warm the solution as directed in the “perfect saline solution” instructions.

Pour the warm saline solution into the pump’s water reservoir. If using the Classic Nasal Irrigator (formerly known as the AHUN), lean over sink and gently place the Classic Nasal Irrigator against the nostril.

Turn on the unit, adjust the volume/pressure slide knob slowly, until there is a comfortable flow of water from one nostril to the other.

Switch sides back and forth until the water is gone.

If using the Classic Deep Sinus Irrigator (Formerly known as NFT) or the Flexible Sinus Stream Irrigator (Formerly known as PL-NF-TU), lean over sink and gently place the irrigation instrument into the nostril. Turn on the pump, adjust the volume/pressure slide knob slowly, until there is a comfortable flow of water in the one nostril. Switch sides back and forth until the water is gone.

After the water in the pump is gone and with your head still leaning over the sink, rotate your head slowly to the right, then to the left.

This will drain some of the excess water from your sinuses.

Stand upright and blow your nose several times.

Again lean over sink and rotate your head slowly to the right, then the left.

Finally clean the sinus irrigation unit and your Ethicare instrument, see the post “Maintaining your sinus irrigation unit”.
